Edmund Spenser (c. 13 January ) was an important English poet and Poet Laureate best known for The Faerie Queene, an epic poem celebrating, through fantastical allegory, the Tudor dynasty and Elizabeth I.

Though he is recognized as one of the premier craftsmen of Modern English verse in its infancy, Spenser is also a controversial figure due to his zeal for the destruction of Edition: Thirteenth Printing. Edmund Spenser was born in or No documentation exists to establish his exact date of birth, but the year is known in part due to Spenser's own poetry.

In Amoretti Son Spenser writes that he is forty-one years old. We know this poem was published in (and written only shortly prior to its publication), so the year of his birth can be closely guessed.
